THE MECHANICS OF THE “CUP” OF THE LORD

Psa 23:5  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Psa 23:6  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

As we come to understand and appreciate the mechanics of the Lord’s Table, it is the “bread and cup” of the Lord that we have to have a full understanding appreciate so that we can fully understand and appreciate what the Apostle Paul was ‘delivering’ unto the saints regarding what happened the night the Lord was betrayed. So let us take a look at the different types of the “cup” of the Lord that are found in the bible. First, we will look at the many verses that show the cup of the wrath of the Lord, and then we will look at the many verses that show the cup of the Lord for the saints. And while we will not go into detail as we look at all of  the verses, I feel you should be fully able to grasp the definition of what the mechanics cup of the Lord is all about as you see how God has used the word “cup” in His word of truth. And that you understand that the “cup of the Lord” is of a spiritual nature only, and this has the same meaning of the “cup” that Paul “delivered” unto the saints to “drink” of in ICorinthians 11:25-28.

THE CUP OF WRATH OF THE LORD:

We now will look at some of the many verses that show the wrath of God against the ungodliness of man, and how the “cup” is used in a symbolic way to “pour out His wrath” upon mankind. And as we can see, God uses the word “cup” to refer the mechanics of His workings with the man in this manner.

THE CUP OF THE LORD FOR THE SAINT:

We will now look at the verses in particular that refer to the cup of the Lord that He has designed for the saint to “drink” to His honor, glory, and will. And we will also see the Lord Himself proclaim that He has a “cup” that was prepared for Him as well. And in every instance we see this is a sanctification issue only! And it is so with the members of the body of Christ in this dispensation of Gentile grace, the “cup of the Lord” is also a sanctification issue dealing with the ministry that we have been made “able ministers” unto. The Apostles of the Lord understood and appreciated the significance of the “cup” of the Lord and what that responsibility entailed as being the Lord’s Apostles who will sit upon “12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel,” notice Matthew 20:21-23, the Apostles knew that the “cup” the Lord spake of would be of a spiritual nature, and it involved their fulfilling His plan, purpose and will for them just as He intended.

Mat 20:23  And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
